1) High requirements for molds. When the blank is cold extruded, the deformation resistance is significantly increased by the triaxial compressive stress in the mold, which makes the stress of the mold much larger than that of the general stamping mold. When the steel is cold extruded, the stress of the mold often reaches 2000MPa 2500MPa. In addition to high strength, the mold also needs to have enough impact toughness and wear resistance. In addition, the strong plastic deformation of the metal blank in the mold will raise the temperature of the mold to about 250 degree 300 degree , so the mold material needs a certain tempering stability. Because of the above, the life of cold extrusion mold is much lower than that of stamping mold.


2) Large tonnage press is required. Due to the large deformation resistance of the blank during cold extrusion, hundreds or even thousands of tons of presses are needed.


3) Due to the high cost of cold extrusion mold, it is generally only suitable for mass production of parts. It is suitable for the minimum batch of 50 100 thousand pieces.


4) The blank shall be surface treated before extrusion. This not only increases the process, needs to occupy a larger production area, and is difficult to achieve production automation.


5) Not suitable for processing of high strength materials.


6)  The plasticity and impact toughness of cold extrusion parts become worse, and the residual stress of parts is large, which will cause the deformation of parts and the reduction of corrosion resistance (stress corrosion).
